Burkina Faso's longtime leader refused to resign Thursday in the face of violent protests that posed the greatest threat to his nearly three-decade rule, saying instead he will lead a transitional government after parliament was dissolved.
Protesters stormed the parliament building and set part of it ablaze in a day of violence around the country to stop a parliamentary vote that would have allowed President Blaise Compaore to seek a fifth term in office. At least one person was killed and several others were wounded amid the melee, authorities said, and a curfew was put in place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. A state of emergency was imposed for several hours but lifted late Thursday. Meet the African leaders who would rather die than give up power : GlobalPost

Blaise Campaore of Burkina Faso. Killed Thomas Sankara. President of Burkina Faso for 27 years and trying to change the constitution but the Burkinabes are saying no...
Mourning in Lusaka. Protests in Ouagadougou. These are two separate events this week in two far-apart countries, Zambia and Burkina Faso, yet they point to a common malaise at the heart of African politics: aging leaders who refuse to give up power.
Zambia’s president Michael Sata, 77, died on Tuesday in a London hospital. The government had tried and failed to dispel rumors of Sata’s ill health by insisting he had traveled to the UK for a “check-up.”

As thousands protest against term limit extension in Burkina Faso, will other African presidents take note? By Ken Opalo

On Tuesday, protesters in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso’s second city, tore down a statue of president Blaise Compaore to express their anger at a proposed constitutional amendment to scrap term limits and extend Compaore’s 27-year rule. And in the capital, Ouagadougou, protesters clashed with security forces after some of them attempted to march towards the National Assembly. This Thursday, the Assembly will debate the proposed amendment to the constitution to extend term limits from two to three consecutive terms. Compaore has been reelected four times since 1991, garnering 80.2 percent of the vote in the last election held in 2010. The announcement of the proposed constitutional change has elicited mixed reactions from the Burkinabe public. The opposition has called for a campaign of civil disobedience until the amendment is withdrawn. Bracing for opposition protests, the government ordered schools closed throughout the week ahead of Thursday’s parliamentary vote.

Fighting between Nigerian troops and Boko Haram insurgents escalated in Mubi, Mararaba Mubi and Uba in Adamawa State on Wednesday.
Casualty figures could not be obtained as of 8pm but the development forced the state government to impose 24-hour curfew on the affected communities.
Our correspondents gathered that   Mubi, the second largest town in the state and host of two high institutions, was the worst hit.
A parent, Ahmad Sajoh, whose   daughter is studying at the Adamawa State University, said that as of 2pm on Wednesday, the police barracks in the Government Reservation Area was overrun by the insurgents while the prison in the town was blown open.
He added that   fighting which was ongoing at the army barracks caused confusion at the IDP camp in the Lamorde area of the town.
