Money Floyd Mayweather Beats Maidana in Close Fight

Floyd Mayweather Jr. notched his 46th straight win with a majority decision over Argentine Marcos Maidana (35-4) on Saturday night.

Mayweather's successful work at the Las Vegas MGM Grand was, however, anything but the boxing walkover it was expected to be. The rugged fighter known as "El Chino" made "Money" Mayweather work for his money at the welterweight unification fight, where Mayweather was defending the WBC belt and Maidana the WBA title.

Kerry: U.S. will help in search for Ni­ger­ian girls kidnapped by militants last month : The Washington Post

 Secretary of State John F. Kerry pledged U.S. help Saturday in finding and returning hundreds of Nigerian girls abducted by militants more than two weeks ago.

“The kidnapping of hundreds of children by Boko Haram is an unconscionable crime,” Kerry said. “We will do everything possible to support the Nigerian government to return these young women to their homes and hold the perpetrators to justice.”

Nigerian authorities said more than 250 girls are still missing after the mass abduction of teenagers from schools on April 14.

A United Nations official just returned from the Central African Republic on Thursday told reporters that the violence between religious communities and the impunity on the ground towards the perpetrators was reaching the point that “people are losing their humanity.”
In the months since violence between members of the Muslim and Christian communities of the CAR — fueled by the former rebels who toppled the government last April and community defense groups who have become just as fond of lynching and looting, respectively — exploded into the international spotlight, the rhetoric between the two previously harmonious groups was providing “foundation for further atrocities,” John Ging, operations director of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said.

President Jacob Zuma wants new propaganda machine

President Jacob Zuma will set up a new information ministry modelled on Zimbabwean, Chinese and Russian government departments should he get a second term as president, the Mail & Guardian reported on Friday.

The newspaper reported sources as saying that Zuma was unhappy with how he was portrayed in the last five years and wants the proposed new ministry, to be headed by current Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj, to clean up his image.

The president would also like to do some other restructuring in government, including recreating the post of a second deputy president, last seen when Nelson Mandela led the country.

Though Maharaj denied any knowledge of the new propaganda machine, government sources told the newspaper that preparations are at an advanced stage.

Ukraine army launches assault on rebel stronghold

Ukrainian troops launched a dawn raid on this rebel stronghold on Friday, taking several checkpoints around the city but meeting heavy resistance from pro-Russian separatists, who shot down two helicopters, killing two crew members.
Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said the army had attacked at 4:30 a.m. local time and come under heavy fire from what he called “terrorists” and “professional mercenaries,” as it attempted to take the city.
“Against Ukraine’s special forces, terrorists used heavy fire, including grenade launchers and anti-aircraft rocket launchers,” he posted on his Facebook page. “It is the real battle with professional mercenaries.”
Avakov said the separatists were firing from residential apartment buildings because they knew the army was under order not to fire at such buildings.

Protests in Lagos, Kano, Ilorin over abducted girls

 

NIGERIANS had a sober May Day yesterday – no thanks to the abduction of 234 school girls in Borno State.

The Government Secondary School, Chibok pupils were snatched away from their hostels on April 15 by Boko Haram gunmen. They are yet to be found.

May Day rallies became a platform for protests over the abduction.

There were protests in Lagos, Kano, Ilorin and Maiduguri.

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima said he was confident that with God, the girls would soon reunite with their parents.

He said his administration would do everything possible to get the girls back home.

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and some women, led by Prof. Hauwa Biu, stormed the Borno State Government House to protest the abduction.

ANC has transformed South Africa - Makhura

The ANC has transformed South Africa over the last 20 years, Gauteng provincial secretary David Makhura said on Wednesday evening.

At a panel discussion hosted by youth organisation Inkulufreeheid at Liliesleaf in Johannesburg, Makhura said: "In the past 20 years, the ANC (African National Congress) has established our track record in government.

"We have shown we are moving this country and Gauteng forward."

WHO: No, Seriously, Stop Abusing Antibiotics

That's according to a 257-page warning today from the World Health Organization (WHO) about increasingly unbeatable, pervasive infectious agents. The analysis of 114 countries is the most comprehensive global look at antimicrobial-drug resistance to date, and it found "very high" rates of resistant infections across all regions, including "alarming" rates in many parts of the world.

If there's ever an upside to panic, it's the possible inspiration of preventive action. Combing responses to this declaration of a "global health security threat," which range from one U.K. expert agreeing we've reached a "critical point" to Doctors Without Borders reporting "horrendous rates of antibiotic resistance," a controlled panic is prudent.

Ukraine's restive east slipping from government's grasp : Reuters

Pro-Moscow separatists seized government offices in more Ukrainian towns on Wednesday, in a further sign that authorities in Kiev are losing control of the country's eastern industrial heartland bordering Russia.

Gunmen who turned up at dawn took control of official buildings in Horlivka, a town of almost 300,000 people, said a Reuters photographer. They refused to be photographed.
