The Kardashian family is an endless source of tabloid gossip and speculation, but it looks like fewer people are bothering to keep up.
Keeping Up With the Kardashians has seen a drop in ratings, and Page Six said the family is not helping magazine sales that much either.
“It’s over. The fatigue factor has really set in,” one magazine publisher told Page Six. “None of the Kardashians, either alone or together, is selling.”
The site shared some examples from Us Weekly, Life & Style, In Touch Weekly and Star magazine, when they all put Kardashians on the covers and reportedly saw lower-than-usual sales.
For example, they claim Us Weekly paid $110,000 for the photo of Kim Kardashian in a white bikini for the Dec. 23 cover headlined “My Body Is Back.” Us usually sells about 500,000 copies a week but a source with access to circulation reports told Page Six that Kim cover sold fewer than 400,000 copies.
One publisher speculated it was because people don't like Kanye West. But Marc Berman of TV Media Insights said it's just "overkill" from the family being everywhere at all times. "E! should give them a break and take them off the air for a season." Maybe absence would make the hearts grow fonder.
The Kardashians still have plenty of followers, and their lives are arguably more fascinating than ever, with the dramas of Khloe's divorce, Kim's upcoming wedding to Kanye, and Kourtney's split rumors.
As E! noted in its press release announcing KUWTK Season 9, which launches on January 14, the show "remains appointment television, with Season 8 delivering 2.3 million total viewers and ranking as cable TV’s #1 original reality series on Sundays in the 9:00pm hour across key demos, including women 18-34 and women 18-49, during its run." So it’s not like the Kardashians are trees falling in the forest with no one around to hear them.
Are you surprised to hear some Kardashian covers aren't leading to big sales? Have you bought a magazine with the family on the cover in the past few months?
