Miley Cyrus devotees may not recognize the 21-year-old when they see her new Twitter profile picture — it's a headshot from yesteryear, taken before she was a pop star, and before she was even Hannah Montana!
In case you only know her as the Party Queen-turned-Empress of the Twerk, Miley Ray Cyrus was actually born as Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992 — named so because her parents, Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus (who married a month after her birth), believed that she was fated for success.
Her sunny disposition as a tot inspired the nickname "Smiley," which was eventually shortened to "Miley." Miley later changed her middle name to "Ray" out of devotion to her grandfather, Billy Ray's father, Ronald Ray Cyrus.
After growing up on a 500-acre farm in Franklin, Tennessee, Miley set her sights on the bright lights of Hollywood and auditioned for Disney Channel's Hannah Montana.
And the rest is history! Miley has shed her clean-cut, Disney persona in surges — that haircut, that VMAS performance, that "Wrecking Ball" — but is now posting this image as her Twitter avatar either as a nostalgic reminder of her youth or as an ironic joke.
