Nigeria bids farewell to ground-breaking athlete

The first Nigerian-born athlete to participate in the Olympic Games, Adegboyega Adedoyin, has passed away, aged 91.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the Minister of Sports and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, has offered his condolences to the family.
"He was no doubt a great sportsman who contributed greatly to the development of sports in Nigeria," Abdullahi said.

"The sporting community and indeed the nation at large will no doubt miss him. I commiserate with his family on this great loss."
Adedoyin participated in the 1948 Games, representing Britain in several sports, including the high and the long jump.

Following that, the athlete completed his medical course and returned home to lead the Nigerian Team to many international athletics competitions.
In his retirement, Adedoyin officiated in different sports and became a mentor for young athletes.
