Chris Brown Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder, Ordered To Stay In Rehab

Singer Chris Brown has had a whirlwind past few months, including an arrest for assault last November that led to a three-month rehab stint. But newly obtained court documents are now offering a little clarity on what may have contributed to Brown’s anger issues.
Brown was back in court on Feb. 28 for a status report related to his 2009 assault on his ex-girlfriend Rihanna. As part of the progress hearing, documents were filed by the rehab facility where Brown successfully finished 95 days of anger-management therapy -- though he only had to complete 90 days of therapy.

According to CNN, the director of the rehab facility describes in the documents that Chris Brown has been diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder, severe insomnia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The facility wrote the following:
"Mr. Brown became aggressive and acted out physically due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD."
The letter adds that Chris is taking medication for his conditions, although the reasons for Brown’s PTSD are never explained. The document also says that Brown has learned numerous exercises to help him relax, and he tested negative for drugs during his time at the facility. The facility even praised the singer for his positive attitude -- especially when it comes to his community-service activities. "Mr. Brown's attitude has been beyond exemplary in regard to his community-service responsibilities," said the letter.
Chris Brown was first ordered to complete the three-month rehab stint last November. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin made the order after it was uncovered the singer was expelled from a different rehab program following incident in which he threw a rock through his mother’s car window. Brown voluntarily entered that Malibu rehab facility after he was arrested in October on a misdemeanor assault charge in Washington, D.C.
As part of the Judge Brandlin’s ruling, Brown also had to undergo drug testing and perform at least 24 hours of community labor each week. And though he received positive feedback from the facility and his probation officer, Brandlin ordered Brown to complete an additional two months in rehab – leading up to his trial for the Washington D.C. assault charge.
On April 23, Brandlin will then decide if Brown will go to jail for violating his probation in the Rihanna assault.
