Best -selling author, pastor and inspirational speaker Myles Munroe died in a plane crash in the Bahamas Sunday night after the jet he and his wife were flying on from Nassau to Freeport crashed on its final approach.
Munroe, a charismatic evangelical leader who had considerable influence, was with his wife, Ruth, on a Lear 36 Executive Jet when it crashed attempting to land, according to a statement released by the Bahamian Ministry of Transport and Aviation.
“It is utterly impossible to measure the magnitude of Dr. Munroe’s loss to the Bahamas and to the world,” Royal Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie told the Associated Press. “He was indisputably one of the most globally recognizable religious figures our nation has ever produced.”
Many titans of faith responded quickly on Twitter to the news of Munroe’s death. Grammy-winning gospel singer CeCe Winans said: “Praying for Myles Munroe family.” Former White House faith adviser Joshua Dubois tweeted: “Devastating news about this great man of God.” Evangelist Paula White tweeted: “ He touched my life and the world for God.”
Munroe was a frequent speaker in the D.C. area at the Jericho City of Praise. In a statement, the church’s former pastor, Bishop Joel Peebles, Pastor of City of Praise Ministries, said: “There are no words that can express the grief we have right now after learning of the passing of Dr. Myles Munroe, and his wife Ruth.
“The City of Praise Family Ministries is forever grateful for the impact Dr. Munroe had on our ministry and all those they touched with their loving hearts,” the statement read. “Dr. Munroe and Ruth were deeply loved by the body of Christ and we are assured that they are at peace as they continue their relationship with Jesus Christ, in heaven.
Jasmin Sculark, senior pastor of Jericho City of Praise said: “We were deeply saddened to learn yesterday of the passing of Dr Myles Munroe who was a prolific scholar, preacher, teacher, leader, and mentor who made an indelible impact in Christendom!” she had in a statement. “Through his books, CD’s and DVD’s particularly on purpose, leadership and character development, he helped shape and refine me personally and professionally.”
Munroe, 60, was the senior pastor of Bahamas Faith Ministries International Fellowship and Ruth Munroe served as the co-pastor.
He also was the organizer of the Global Leadership Forum, an event that was scheduled to begin today. The forum will continue as planned.
Born in the Bahamas, Munroe was educated in the United States. He earned degrees from Oral Roberts University and the University of Tulsa. He also served as an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of Theology at Oral Roberts University.
In addition to being a pastor and teacher, he was author of 69 books and a motivational speaker around the world.
Rev. Grainger Browning, pastor of Ebenezer AME Church, said Munroe was an anointed teacher:
“He explained things in such a way. Whatever he was teaching it grabbed a hold of your spirit in a practical way.”
Browning said he heard Munroe teach about the life of Peter at a T.D. Jakes pastors conference and even though Munroe was using a power point presentation it was never-the-less moving. “It was so powerful that when he finished Bishop Jakes fell into his arms.”
