Opinion: A state of emergency has brought calm to Ethiopia. But don’t be fooled. By Paul Schemm
Ethiopia President: Mulatu Teshome
Earlier this month, hundreds of high school students in the small Ethiopian town of Meti gathered for a demonstration.
They were supposed to be celebrating the country’s Nations and Nationalities day, which commemorates the much-vaunted equality of Ethiopia’s 80 ethnic groups. Instead, they defied a two-month-old state of emergency to voice their anger over stalled political reforms and endemic corruption.

Amhara Uprising: Poverty as a cause of instability | By D. K. Bimrew
Per the 2007 Population and Housing Census, Amhara is the second largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia. Mostof the Amhara population lives in Godner, Gojjam, Wollo and Shewa provinces. However, due to historical reasons significant number of Amhara people are distributed throughout Ethiopia which makes the most widely dispersed ethnic groups in Ethiopia as well. Before the coming of TPLF to power, Amhara people were leading relatively a stable life in different parts of Ethiopia. However, the coming in to power of the TPLF and its consequent introduction of ethnicfederalism has resulted in the surge of anti-Amhara sentiment by the government agents.
In central Africa, citizens are using social media to build democracy. Here’s how. By Elie Smith
The Lord’s Resistance Army is finally weakening in central Africa. This could dismantle it. By Ledio Cakaj and Paul Ronan
Five years later, although the LRA is much weaker, Kony remains at large, orchestrating attacks against civilians. The Ugandan military, which has been leading the anti-LRA effort, has announced that it will withdraw from pursuing the group by the end of the year, citing a lack of international support.
With Kony’s increasingly erratic and brutal leadership alienating many followers, the best opportunity to dismantle the LRA at this point may be encouraging disillusioned members to defect.

Photo: Men made a mess of Somalia, now women want to fix it
Fatumo Dayib during interview with the Nation on October 14, 2016. She
is eyeing the Somalia presidential seat in the ongoing elections.
Raped, abused and subjected to genital
mutilation, many women suffer terribly in Somalia, an unrepentantly
patriarchal country shown by successive surveys as one of the worst
places to be female.
A quota
reserving 30 percent of parliamentary seats for women in current
elections is supposed to help bring change and place at least a share of
political power in female hands — but it faces stiff resistance.
"Somali
women participate in daily life but when it comes to politics it is
challenging," said Deqa Yasin, the female deputy head of the national
election organising body.
"How do you make the process as inclusive as possible?"

African Woman but Not Religious By Leo Igwe
She is from Ndola in the self-acclaimed Christian country, Zambia, but currently, Cynthia lives in one of the European countries where she works as a school teacher. Not too long ago, Cynthia came out as a non-theist. She has joined the growing number of African women who openly and publicly identify as non-religious. I spoke to Cynthia some months ago and she narrated to me her tortuous journey from religion to irreligion. It is a journey that took this brave, thoughtful and curious woman across different Christian denominations but also across continents.
Opinion: Just rename the ICC to the African Criminal Court by Tananoka Joseph Whande
Robert Mugabe has always had a habit of referring to himself in the first person plural.Whatever he dreamed about the night before and wants to turn into law the next morning becomes “we decided that…”
Ego is a very fragile thing that has to be pampered minute by minute and, in the case of an African president, at a great cost to a nation.
African leaders never miss the opportunity to remind everyone outside their borders that they are sovereign nations that are free to do as they please.

physical appearance can be resized, renamed, redesigned and re-done—to

Opinion: Ethiopian Opposition Wants 'Real Change' But Views on Tactics Differ By Jill Craig
Ethiopian soldiers confront protesters in Bishoftu, in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, Oct. 2, 2016
Insisting the demonstrations in Ethiopia’s Oromia region during the past year are a mass movement, not just two or three protest groups, Merera Gudina, the chairman of Ethiopia’s opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, is calling for the government to listen to the people's demands.
“Our struggle, until a democratic state is created in the country, a political system that accommodates for all the citizens in the country, is created, we continue our struggle,” said Gudina. “Whatever the cost may be.”
He says the government has been using "carrot and stick" tactics. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has promised political reforms, which Gudina says are “too little, too late." Desalegn also announced a six-month national state of emergency to restore order. More pics after cut.......

Opinion: Malawi @ 52: Where would we be if we had leaders who were passionate about our country?
Malawi President Peter Mutharika
In 1964 Malawi had 2 million citizens. Agriculture had value in crops, the currency was bold and strong. We had more exports than imports. Aid and grants kept flowing. The dream of relocating the capital from Zomba to Lilongwe was a brilliant idea considering in mind population growth and the needs of the citizens in future. If so much was invested on collective needs of people not unilateral needs of individuals, our country could be far by today.
To say that our country has had less intelligent leaders and stakeholders is an understatement. The truth is that our country has had enlightened leaders but of gullible mindset and hateful attitude against citizens and the country.

Photo: Why musicians shouldn’t be judged for playing on political party platforms By Fraser G. McNeill
The country’s rap artist AKA was recently quoted as saying if you go a little bit too far with the politics, there may be political repercussions.
He was referring to musicians engaging in self-censorship to avoid being denied state-sponsored performance opportunities. This led Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema to conclude that musicians who perform for political parties have become “captured celebrities”.
