Earthquake struck Parts of South Africa South of the Commercial Capital Johannesburg, Today

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck parts of South Africa south of the commercial capital Johannesburg on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The earthquake was centred six kilometres (3.7 miles) east of Orkney, which is 180 kilometres (112 miles) south of Johannesburg, at 10:22 GMT.
More than half an hour after it struck, no reports of casualties had been received by one of the country's largest emergency services ER24.

The tremor was also felt in neighbouring countries of Botswana and Mozambique.
ENCA reports that a building in Orkney had collapsed and one man had lost his life.
AngloGold Ashanti had sent a team underground to inspect the well-being of their miners.

Nigeria confirms doctor as 2nd Ebola case

Dozens of local doctors and medical staff are among the dead, as foreign aid workers are arriving to help fight the Ebola outbreak and the Liberian government Information Minister Lewis Brown announced that all Ebola victims are to be cremated as fears rise that the disease could spread with bodies being buried in residential areas.

 Nigerian authorities on Monday confirmed a second case of Ebola in Africa's most populous country, an alarming setback as officials across the region battle to stop the spread of a disease that has killed more than 700 people in four countries.

A Thai musician has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for royal defamation, a court official said, in the latest conviction under a controversial lese majeste law.

The 28-year-old was found guilty of posting insulting messages about the monarchy on Facebook between 2010 and 2011, said a court official from the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, without giving further details.

Israel, Hamas agree to 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire

Israel and Hamas began observing an unconditional, 72-hour humanitarian truce Friday morning, a cease-fire that diplomats from the United States and the United Nations announced Thursday that could potentially pave the way for an end to the 24-day-old conflict.
In a joint statement, Secretary of State John F. Kerry and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said both sides in the conflict are sending delegations to Cairo for negotiations aimed at reaching a lasting cease-fire.
