Malawi elections: Peter Mutharika wins presidential polls

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Peter Mutharika has been declared as the winner in the recent presidential elections in Malawi.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) said that the 74-year-old opposition leader had won around 36.4 per cent of the votes in the May 20 presidential elections in which millions of people were eligible to vote.

The leader of the Malawi Congress Party, Lazarous Chakewra, secured around 28.7 per cent of the votes followed by outgoing president with 20.7 per cent votes, the MEC reportedly stated.

Soon after the election results were declared, the outgoing president had claimed that the voting was rigged and had demanded a recount.

Mutharika has served as the foreign minister in the Malawi government and is the brother of the late President Bingu wa Mutharika.
