Uganda holds 6 terror suspects, seizes explosives

An armoured carrier of African Union (AU) troops is seen that escaped a suicide car bomb explosion targeting the peacekeeping troops travelling in a convoy outside the capital Mogadishu September 8, 2014. Somalia's al Shabaab Islamist group claimed responsibility for two car bomb attacks on Monday targeting African peacekeepers and a government convoy, the first such strikes by the group since it vowed revenge for the killing of its leader last week.  REUTERS

A Uganda military spokesman says six terror suspects were arrested over the weekend in a raid on an al-Shabab cell that was apparently plotting an attack in this East African country.

Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda said Monday that explosives were seized from the suspects, all of whom are of Somali origin. He said they are under interrogation and more arrests are likely.

The U.S. Embassy in Uganda said Monday the terror threat had been "effectively countered" after warning U.S. citizens on Saturday to stay at home amid an operation to foil a terror plot.
Uganda, which has troops fighting al-Shabab in Somalia, has been on high alert amid concerns the al-Qaida-linked militants are plotting an attack similar to the assault on a mall in Kenya a year ago.
