Nov. 26 (GIN) – South Africa will mark World AIDS Day on Dec. 1 with a full palette of music – from the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra to the New Apostolic Church Cape Choir - at the Artscape Opera House in Western Cape. Hope Maimane of the Waterfront Theatre College will offer a dance recital.
While some statistics are improving, AIDS activists warn that belt-tightening in western countries may erase these hard-won gains.

Asari Dokubo Released By Beninoise Gendarmes, Flown To Abuja

The leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, who was   arrested  yesterday in Cotonou, Benin Republic has been released.
Mr.  Dokubo was released after President Goodluck Jonathan personally intervened on his behalf with the Beninoise President Yayi Boni.
Festus Keyamo, a civil rights activist and personal attorney to Mr. Dokubo confirmed his release to Saharareporters.
Dokubo, who once bragged openly that his arrest will lead to the demise of Nigeria spent 36 hours with the Beninoise gendarmes before his release around 1 AM Nigerian time today.
 
President Jonathan reportedly deployed a jet to ferry Mr. Asari to Abuja a few hours after his release.

UN: Mass Spying May Be a Human Rights Violation

Following the steady stream of revelations about the NSA’s surveillance program, a United Nations human rights committee passed a “right to privacy in the digital age” resolution on Tuesday. The resolution, co-sponsored by Brazil and Germany, two countries whose leaders were spied on by the NSA, states that “that surveillance and data interception by governments and companies ‘may violate or abuse human rights,’” Agence France Presse reports.

More Nigerians die of diabetes than HIV/AIDS –Experts

During a recent workshop organised by a non-governmental organisation, The Sunny Kuku Foundation, in collaboration with Healthways Communications, Adeyemi-Doro, noted that diabetes accounted for a lot of  deaths in Nigeria and other parts of the world, adding that it was fast becoming the most dreaded disease.

A statement by the International Diabetes Federation says that between eight and 14 million deaths are caused by diabetes every year in developing countries.
