Calls for justice and speculation over why and how Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was killed continued on Tuesday, two days after the crime.

Police maintained Meyiwa was shot as he moved towards a door during a confrontation with the robbers. Several newspapers quoted Meyiwa’s friend, Tumelo Madladla, as saying Meyiwa was shot as he tried to protect his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.

A member of the public tweeted that Meyiwa was shot as he intervened as Khumalo’s younger sister, Zandi, and her boyfriend fought.
National Union of Metalworkers of SA spokesman Castro Ngobese cautioned about speculating about the killing.
“We join his team, Pirates, in calling on all our people to desist from making ill-informed conclusions on the circumstances that led to Senzo’s murder,” said Ngobese.
Numsa described the culprits as “rotten social scum”.
The 27-year-old Orlando Pirates captain and national squad goalkeeper was shot on Sunday. The married father was visiting pop star and actress Khumalo, at her mother’s home in Vosloorus on the East Rand when they were attacked. Meyiwa was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital.
Minutes after police released sketches of the two dreadlocked suspects, they had been retweeted hundreds of times on Twitter. Some Tweeters posted pictures of people they claimed resembled the drawings.
@DenzDK tweeted: “I won’t lie, the one identity kit for #SenzoMeyiwa’s murder kinda looks like Snoop Dogg, or should I call him Lion?”
Television news channel ANN7 tweeted that a man “familiar to one of the identity kits released by police” had been detained and taken in for questioning.
Police dismissed the allegations.
“There have been no arrests,” said Brigadier Neville Malila.
eNCA reported that a man who resembled one of those depicted on the police sketches had been taken into the Vosloorus police station, but was soon released. The news channel reported that Meyiwa’s wife, Mandisa, had been seen leaving the police station.
She was expected to go to Meyiwa’s home in Umlazi, Durban, ahead of her husband’s funeral on Saturday.
In Umlazi, mourners continued to sing on the street outside Meyiwa’s home. Soccer stars, including Pirates player Lucky Lekgwathi and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, and Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula arrived at Meyiwa’s home to pay their respects.
People continued conveying their shock and condolences.
@MbobyP tweeted: “This #SenzoMeyiwa death is more like when Mandela died, there’s just this atmosphere I can’t explain”.
SA Football Players Union general secretary Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe said Meyiwa, one of its members, was “a warrior of the working class, a gentleman par excellence, a leader who led from the front”.
The Freedom Front Plus said government had to acknowledge the country’s crime problem.
“Government should acknowledge now that crime, and especially contact crimes, has just about gotten out of control. Real steps should without any delay be taken to make law abiding citizens feel safe in their country again,” party leader Pieter Mulder said.
Meanwhile, it was widely reported that the Meyiwa family had hired private investigators to look into the killing.
