The Islamic State group on Tuesday released a video purporting to the show the execution of an Israeli citizen it claimed was a member of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. Mohamed Said Ismail Musallam, 19, was captured by the ISIS militants after they allegedly discovered he was a spy.
Unlike previous videos of hostage executions released by the terrorist group, the executioners were unmasked, and they were speaking French, not English or Arabic. Two males were present with the hostage, and the younger one, looking no older than 12, is seen shooting Musallam at close range repeatedly.
The use of French is likely an attempt to recruit French Muslims, who have long felt discriminated against in France. The older male makes a reference to the January attack at a kosher grocery store in Paris, in which ISIS sympathizer Amedy Coulibaly killed four people.
“O Jews, Allah has gifted us with killing your followers in your own stronghold in France,” the older ISIS militant said. “As for here in the Islamic State, the young lion of the Khalifa will kill the one sent by the foolish Mossad to spy on the secrets of the mujahidin and the Muslims.”
The video opens with Musallam clothed in an orange jumpsuit, as ISIS hostages are usually seen wearing. He recites in Arabic what appears to be a prepared monologue, detailing his journey from the Mossad training camp to the headquarters of the group in Syria. He also claimed his brother and father, both of whom ISIS accused of being part of the Mossad, “encouraged” him to infiltrate the militant group as a spy.
His Israeli superiors reportedly gave him orders to infiltrate the group and report back with the names of every Palestinian with Israeli citizenship who had joined ISIS, Musallam said. He was also to find out the locations of all weapons storage caches, missiles and ISIS bases.
The video ends with a list of alleged Mossad agents and their personal information such as place of residence and, in some cases, their photo.
