About 500 others have been wounded in clashes sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza's bid for a third term, Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, head of the Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Incarcerated Persons, said yesterday in the capital, Bujumbura. The country's Red Cross on June 4 said at least 21 people had died in the unrest.
Burundi has been rocked by demonstrations since the ruling party nominated Nkurunziza as its presidential candidate for elections rescheduled for July 15. Opponents say his bid violates a two-term limit.
