The mood on the South lawns at the Union Buildings in Pretoria is festive as thousands celebrated Freedom Day. The celebrations come as exactly 20 years since South Africa held its first non-racial elections in 1994.

The crowds gathered as they awaited the address by President Jacob Zuma. The theme for the celebrations this year is,  "South Africa: A better place to live in".

Zuma is expected to use the celebrations as an opportunity for the nation, to reflect on how freedom and democracy were achieved, and on whether the post-Apartheid democratic government has managed to deliver a better life for all.

President Zuma was warmly received by cheers from the crowds shortly before the Ceremonial Guard of Honour as well as a 21 round gun salute.
