What Your Sleeping Position Says About Your Relationship
What happens between the sheets may be a huge predictor of how satisfied you are with your relationship—and not in the way you might think. A recent survey from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom found a link between sleep position and happiness in a relationship.
The study, run out of the University of Hertfordshire in England, surveyed over 1,000 people, asking them questions about their sleeping position and the quality of their bond. What researchers found: Whether or not you’re touching your partner can be a key indicator into how healthy your bond is, regardless of what position you choose to sleep. “Ninety-four percent of couples who spent the night in contact with each other were happy with their relationship, compared to 68% who didn’t touch,” study author Richard Wiseman, PhD, said in statement.
Don't worry too much if you have a strict "his side" and "her side" bedtime policy. If you and your guy are generally happy, then spreading out and snoozing at night may be far more important to your wellbeing than cuddling...and tossing and turning. A 2013 study from the University of Berkeley found that a disrupted night’s sleep can negatively impact how you treat your partner during the day. Not only that, but a study from the University of Chicago found that lack of sleep can cause testosterone levels in men to plummet, making them less likely to be in the mood for other activities the bedroom may offer.
Bottom line: If you’re both happy with your relationship in and out of the bedroom, it doesn’t matter if you sleep one inch apart, as 12% of couples have been found to do, or are part of the 2% of couples who crash 30 inches apart from each other. (FYI, 42% of couples sleep back to back, 31% face the same direction, and only 4% face each other.)
