A slice of cake from Princess Diana’s wedding to Prince Charles in 1981 has been sold at an auction for $1375.
The 33-year-old cake in its original white and silver presentation box was sold by Nate D.Sanders Auctions of Los Angeles in an online auction on Thursday.
A card on the box says the cake comes “With best wishes from Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince & Princess of Wales," an Associated Press report said.
Sam Heller, spokesman for the auction house said the buyer of the cake is a private collector and said that despite the cake being wrapped in its original wax paper it wouldn’t be edible.
Heller said there are a small but dedicated group of royal cake collectors with some having purchased cakes that date back to Great Britain’s Queen Victoria marriage in 1840.
Princess Diana’s wedding to Price Charles, the Price of Wales on the July 29, 1981 was one of the most widely covered weddings and was dubbed a "fairytale wedding" and the "wedding of the century.” It wedding was broadcast of television and was watched by about 750 million people around the world. However the couple separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996.
Prince Diana died in high-speed car crash Paris on August 31, 1997 along with companion Dodi Fayed, son of billionaire and former owner of Harrod's Mohamed Al-Fayed.
