Glenda* was a 16-year-old single mother when she met Adam*. He was charismatic, intensely interested in her and swept her off her feet. Little did she know that this relationship would strip her of her self-worth and leave her physically and emotionally broken. This is Glenda’s story and the story of thousands of other women like her who struggle to break free of abusive relationships.



Glenda had been a straight-A student before she fell pregnant at 16. The father of her child left her, leaving her alone and vulnerable. Then she met Adam and fell in love, believing that they could build a future together. She was determined to make a success of the relationship.
But then Adam started to behave in ways that worried Glenda. He was possessive and started to criticise her friends and family. To keep the peace, Glenda distanced herself from the people she loved the most. Then, one day, he hit her.

Girl raped, set on fire

 INCONSOLABLE: The grandmother of a nine-year-old left to die after a particularly vicious rape in Delft, near Cape Town

A nine-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being raped and set alight on the Cape Flats.
The Grade 3 pupil was tied up, raped, strangled, burned and then left to die in undergrowth in Delft. She is now in an intensive care unit at the Red Cross Children's Hospital.
A 27-year-old man will appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court today on charges of rape and attempted murder.

Elton John will finally tie the knot with longtime partner

 

 

 

Pop icon Elton John says he will tie the knot with partner David Furnish now that his native Britain has legalised gay marriage.
The top-selling artist told NBC's Today show that "we'll do it very quietly".
"But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion," John added.

The couple, who have two children together, entered into a civil partnership in 2005.
A historic law legalising same-sex marriage took effect in England and Wales on Saturday, the final stage in the long fight for legal equality for gays and lesbians.

The crowning comes after the 12 finalists took part in the Road to Miss SA reality show hosted by Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).

The finale was a glamorous event with musical acts like Mi Casa, Bucie and Matthew Mole. Apart from the platinum crown made by Jack Friedman jewellers, the winner also received a prize package worth R1.3m.

US, Russia talks fail to end Ukraine deadlock

The United States and Russia agreed Sunday that the crisis in Ukraine requires a diplomatic resolution, but four hours of talks between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov failed to break a tense East-West deadlock over how to proceed.
Sitting face-to-face but not seeing eye-to-eye on any of the most critical issues, Kerry and Lavrov advanced far- different proposals on how to calm tensions and de-escalate the situation, particularly as Russia continues to mass troops along its border with the former Soviet republic. As he called for Moscow to begin an immediate pullback of the troops, Kerry also ruled out discussion of Russia's demand for Ukraine to become a loose federation until-and-unless Ukrainians are at the table.

‘Rich beggar’ paradox that is Africa’s $200bn cash reserves

African countries are holding cash reserves outside the continent totalling nearly $200 billion, which they fear to invest locally owing to rising risks.

The funds, nearly a third of the more than $500 billion in total reserves held by the countries, have been invested mainly in developed economies, said the UN’s Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

Zimbabwe warns of fake husbands on the loose

Zimbabwe has warned women to be wary of foreigners, especially from Bangladesh, who seek their hand in marriage saying most of them were criminals.

Registrar-general Tobaiwa Mudede warned marriage officers to be on high alert, saying there was an increasing number of foreigners acquiring Zimbabwean identification particulars illegally.

He said, the criminals, mostly Asian, used the IDs to enter into marriages of convenience with Zimbabwean women.

EU seeks to divide Africa, Sudan says as Bashir denied invite

Sudan on Sunday accused the European Union of trying to divide Africa after the EU refused to invite President Omar al-Bashir to a major summit this week.

Mr Bashir is wanted by The Hague-based International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Sudan's Darfur region, where conflict has raged for 11 years.

"Until today, March 30, President Bashir has not received an invitation to the summit," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The summit on Wednesday and Thursday will gather representatives of 90 nations from both continents, including 65 heads of state and government.

A long queue forms every morning in front of a clinic in Tomping refugee camp of South Sudanese capital Juba, where thousands have sought shelter for fear of being killed for their ethnicity.

Mothers bring children wrapped in blankets whom nurses place on scales to weigh for malnutrition. But one afternoon, the small bundle in the arms of one mother was silent and no longer moved.

"It's a shame," said Matthieu Ebel, coordinator of the clinic run by the aid organization Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), after he arranged for the tiny body to be collected for burial.
