How to Praise Your Kids Without Messing Them Up for Life

Praising your kids—it seems like an obvious, not-fraught thing parents should do. And yet, according to a new study, delivering praise to children in ways that inspire rather than sabotage is harder than it sounds.
What forms of cheerleading stick? How do you convey sincerity? How do you avoid burdening your kid with stratospheric expectations? Developmental scientists have been asking these questions for a while now. So far, the research has treated praise as a fixed influence—a kind of powdered sugar (or crack) that tastes the same to everyone.

The 56th annual Grammy Awards red carpet was a well-documented snooze. Even Queen Bey, a couple of French robots and an oddly minimalist New Zealander couldn’t save the bland train wreck of what was once an annual fashion holiday. Without the likes of Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj (none of whom were nominated), there seemed an enormous drought of talent willing to take an outsize risk.
A handful of the veterans did their part, albeit in foreseeable formats.
