Photo: 'Congo rumba king' Papa Wemba dies

 

Papa Wemba, known around the world as the "king of Congolese rumba", has died after collapsing on stage during a concert.
The musician fell ill on Saturday while performing at a music festival in Abidjan in Ivory Coast. He was 66.
The cause of his death is not known yet.
Baudouin Banza Mukalay, culture minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, confirmed his death, calling it a "great loss for the country and all of Africa".

Hundreds of people hurled stones at police and looted dozens of foreign-owned shops in different townships in Lusaka on Tuesday, police said, the second day of violence prompted by rumours of immigrants carrying out ritual murders.

A united Darfur with greater autonomy has long been a demand of ethnic minority insurgents battling the Sudanese government since 2003, but they have boycotted the referendum, saying it is unfair.

In a city known for violence, Fati Abubakar walks the streets of Maiduguri armed with a camera. Her mission: to rebuild the reputation of the Borno State capital, widely known as the birthplace of the brutal Boko Haram insurgency.
Since last September, the volunteer aid worker has taken pictures of people, interviewed them and posted the results on social media. She calls her project “Bits of Borno.”
“It’s everyday life in Borno State, something you don’t usually see,” Abubakar told VOA in an interview in Nigeria’s capital Abuja.

The tiny southern African nation of Botswana is leading the way in treatment and containment of the virus that causes AIDS. It is exceeding goals for addressing the HIV crisis, well ahead of a deadline set by the United Nations.
Botswana, with HIV infection rates of up to 25 percent of the adult population, has moved ahead of other countries — both Western nations and the economically disadvantaged — in tackling the AIDS epidemic.

Gun Battles Kill 17 in Congo Capital

At least 17 people have been killed in a gun battle between former militiamen and security forces in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo.
A government spokesman said three police officers, two civilians and 12 attackers were killed Monday.
The shooting came weeks after President Denis Sassou Nguesso won a disputed re-election bid for his third term.
Police say former members of an anti-Nguesso militia called "The Ninjas" raided local police, military and government offices and set them on fire.

President Mugabe wants to kick out foreign businesses that won’t give control to black Zimbabweans by Tinashe Mushakavanhu

 

This is no April fool’s joke.

Robert Mugabe’s government is pressing ahead with a controversial law to force foreign owned businesses to give up majority control to black Zimbabweans. It has set an April 1 deadline for all foreign-owned companies to comply or close shop. Household names like Standard Chartered, British American Tobacco, Anglo American Platinum and Nestlé, who have operated in the country for decades, could be affected.

Mugabe’s nephew, Patrick Zhuwao, minister responsible for youth, indigenization and economic empowerment issued the directive last week. He warned failure to comply will result in licenses being revoked and there is no room for negotiation. ‘I’m not here to discuss whether indigenization is good. It’s the law of the land, a fact,’ he said.
