Bernice Maune from Destiny magazine called it “the night of the underdogs” as the hard work of those across the spectrum of the radio industry was rewarded.
Campus radio TUKS FM was one of the night’s biggest winners, having won 9 out of the 14 awards that they were nominated for including Best Daytime Show and the coveted Station of the Year award in the campus category.
Talk Radio 702 won the Station of the Year award in the commercial category while the “King of Broadcasting” John Berks received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
A large panel of judges, chosen for their expertise in a range of professions, included the likes of Kate Turkington, Koos Radebe, Zaid Bhoola and Bonga Mpanza.

“One thing that was noticed and commented on by the various adjudicators is the standard of radio in South Africa, which is excellent and most certainly on a par with some of the best radio elsewhere in the world. I certainly believe that the MTN Radio Awards has contributed to an increased focus on excellence and has raised the overall standard of the industry," said Lance Rothschild, CEO of the MTN Radio Awards.
A highlight of the evening was a tribute to Nelson Mandela. A presentation of his photographs and quotes and voice-overs from a number of his speeches had the crowd in a roar of applause. Co-host for the evening, Alex Jay said that he felt proud of the media industry for the way in which they covered the death of the former statesman.
“The radio industry, like the mobile telecommunications industry, has to be flexible, agile and receptive to new technologies. MTN has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the radio industry, we love radio and in particular, the way radio has very specifically adopted mobile communications and incorporated mobile communications into making increasingly-compelling content,” said MTN SA’s chief marketing officer Brian Gouldie.
