55 Killed As Tiv Youths And Fulani Herdsmen Clash In Benue State, Nigeria.

It was a bloody afternoon Sunday  March 23 in Benue state as some youths of the Tiv tribe clashed with suspected Fulani mercenaries in the state, leaving 55 people dead. The communal clash which is reported to be about land matters happened at Gbajimba, the headquarters of Guma LGA of the state.

EU-AU summit: Mugabe's wife not invited

Cape Town – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's spokesperson George Charamba has reportedly taken a swipe at the EU's "attempt to stop First Lady [Grace Mugabe] from travelling with her husband" who is set to attend an EU-AU summit in Belgium next week.

According to The Herald, George Charamba said it was strange that the EU had not extended an invitation to the First Lady, adding "What God has put together the EU is trying to separate".

It was the grim news that families of the missing Malaysian Airlines flight had dreaded for weeks, and on Monday they heard it from Malaysia’s prime minister: new analysis of satellite data indicates the missing plane crashed into a remote corner of the Indian Ocean. 

 Bad weather suspended the search Tuesday for any remains of a Malaysian jetliner as China demanded information a day after Malaysia's leader said the heartbreaking conclusion was that Flight 370 had crashed in the southern Indian Ocean with no survivors.

Planes and ships have been crisscrossing a remote area of ocean 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) southwest of Australia, but the search was called off because of waves up to 4 meters (12 feet), high winds and heavy rain.

The High Court in Pretoria was read a WhatsApp message from Reeva Steenkamp to her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius, saying she was scared of him sometimes -- less than a month before he shot her dead in his home in Pretoria.

In one of the 1,709 messages Captain Francois Moller extracted from the couple's phones, Moller read a message from Steenkamp sent on January 27 2013.

ANC launches youth platform

Young people must take a strong lead in growing the South African economy and becoming involved, ANC treasurer general Zweli Mkhize said on Monday.

"We have taken a very comprehensive view on youth empowerment. We want skills development and capacity development among the youth," he said on a televised broadcast of The New Age business briefing in Johannesburg.

The African National Congress on Monday launched the Progressive Youth in Business forum which focuses on youth entrepreneurship.

Nigeria: 16 saved from ritual killing site

Cape Town - Nigerian police rescued 16 people from an underground dungeon believed to be a ritual killing site, the local newspaper Leadership reported Sunday.

The officers also discovered several decomposing bodies and body parts, hundreds of human skulls, old clothes, photographs and voter cards in the chamber located in a forest near Soka in the western state of Oyo. 

Egypt sentences 529 Morsi supporters to death

Cairo - A court in southern Egypt has convicted 529 supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, sentencing them to death on charges of murdering a policeman and attacking police.

The court in Minya issued its ruling on Monday after only two sessions in which the defendants' lawyers complained they had no chance to present their case.

Those convicted are part of a group of 545 defendants on trial for the killing of a police officer, attempted killing of two others, attacking a police station and other acts of violence.

More than 150 suspects stood trial, the others were tried in absentia. Sixteen were acquitted.

The defendants were arrested after violent demonstrations that were a backlash for the police crackdown in August on pro-Morsi sit-ins in Cairo that killed hundreds of people.

Blast kills 32 in northeast Nigerian village

Maiduguri - Hospital and local government officials say an explosion at a village market near hideouts of Islamic extremists in northeast Nigeria has killed 32 people.

Local government officials said 29 people died at the scene at Ngurosoye village. The explosion happened on Thursday and because of poor communications it is only now that word of it is getting out.

The military has cut cell phone service in the area. Ngurosoye is near the Sambisa forest in Borno state bordering Cameroon where the military has been carrying out aerial bombardments and ground assaults on camps of Islamic militants.

A hospital official said three of the injured died at the hospital on Friday and Saturday. The death toll could rise with some victims seriously injured. Most victims were traders.

59 Dead From Ebola Outbreak In Guinea

An outbreak of Ebola has killed at least 59 people in Guinea, according to UNICEF,CNN reported Sunday. The often-fatal hemorrhagic fever has rapidly spread through southern communities in the West African nation.

Experts in Guinea were initially unable to identify the illness that was causing diarrhea, vomiting and fever in the country about a month ago, but early Saturday, Health Minister Remy Lamah said that a viral hemorrhagic fever was detected. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a viral hemorrhagic fever affects multiple organ systems in the body.

Ukraine orders troop pullout from Crimea

 Ukraine's fledgling government ordered troops to withdraw from Crimea on Monday, ending days of wavering as Russian troops consolidate control over the peninsula.

Russian forces have been systematically seizing Ukrainian ships and military installations in Crimea, including a naval base near the eastern Crimean port of Feodosia, where two wounded servicemen were taken captive on Monday and as many as 80 were detained on-site, Ukrainian officials said.

Australians, Chinese spot objects in Indian Ocean

A Chinese plane on Monday spotted two white, square-shaped objects in an area identified by satellite imagery as containing possible debris from the missing Malaysian airliner, while the United States separately prepared to send a specialized device that can locate black boxes. The crew aboard an IL-76 plane sighted the object in the southern Indian Ocean and reported the coordinates to the Australian command center, which is coordinating the multinational search, as well as the Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon, which is en route to the area, China's Xinhua News Agency reported. 

 Ships rushed to the location of floating objects spotted Monday by Australian and Chinese planes in the southern Indian Ocean close to where multiple satellites have detected possible remains of the lost Malaysian airliner.
