MAIDUGURI, Nigeria—In a forest of thorn trees somewhere far outside this city, the Boko Haram insurgency ran a boot camp for about 100 boys. Children as young as 5 years old learned to handle assault rifles and march through the woods in flip-flops. Their teacher was only 15.

A survey by Afrobarometer showed that the youth in Africa are losing interest in politics.
Joseph Maniragena partnership officer at African Monitor said: “Young people see politicians as corrupt people and therefore they are not inspired. Young people‚ specifically in South Africa‚ don't see any change. Political parties come during elections ... After elections‚ politicians don't come back.”
The survey‚ conducted by Afrobarometer in 36 African states‚ showed that the youth had low interest in politics‚ civil action and community rallies when compared to people over the age of 35.

Results announced Saturday morning indicate that the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate, Hakainde Hichilema, is in the lead with 47, 706 votes followed by the incumbent Edgar Lungu with 41, 572 votes.
These are official results released by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) on Saturday morning from 8 out of the 156 constituencies.
The United National Independence Party (UNIP) candidate, Tilyenji Kaunda is third with 541 votes followed by the PAC candidate with 527 votes.
Total registered voters are 163, 520 and total votes cast are 94, 100. Total rejected votes are 2,567.

Universities, no matter where they are, ought to be places where knowledge is internalised, questioned and considered. Such knowledge should respond to a university’s particular social, political and economic context. The pursuit of such knowledge happens in a quest for human development. What would a university be if its only purpose was to produce knowledge without considering its effects on a society and its people?
