South Africa's prosperity hinges on Gauteng's economy: EFF

Job creation and inequality are central to the Economic Freedom Fighters' plan for Gauteng, its candidate for premier Dali Mpofu said.

"There is no province in... South Africa which demonstrates the problems of the country more than Gauteng; poverty and squalor sit side by side with opulence," he said in a statement.

The greatest number of wealthy, white South Africans lived in the province, and vast numbers of black South Africans migrated there in the hopes of escaping poverty.

If elected to govern Gauteng, the EFF would identify the causes of this migration, and identify suitable solutions in line with the party's manifesto and constitutional policy framework.

Mpofu said Gauteng contributed about 36 percent to the South African economy, more than 10 percent to the continent's economy, and was home to more than a quarter of registered voters.

"These three statistics make it clear that any hope for economic prosperity for individual South Africans, for the country, and the continent hinge directly on the development of the Gauteng economy."

Unemployment, HIV and Aids, and poverty needed to be urgently addressed for the sake of everyone in the province.

"We either all swim or all sink," Mpofu said.
