Foreign dignitaries head for President Zuma inauguration

President Jacob Zuma will be inaugurated at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has confirmed that Heads of State and Government, Deputy Heads of State and Government and Former Heads of State and Government will be amongst the foreign dignitaries at the Presidential inauguration on Saturday, 24 May.

President Jacob Zuma will be inaugurated at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

According to a press release by DIRCO on Friday, dignitaries will be coming from different countries such:
“Algeria, Angola; Benin; Botswana; Burkina Faso; Burundi; Cameroon; Cape Verde; Chad; Congo (Brazzaville): Democratic Republic of Congo; Equatorial Guinea; Ethiopia; Gambia; Ghana; Guinea; Kenya; Lesotho; Libya; Madagascar; Malawi; Mali; Mauritania; Mauritius; Mozambique; Namibia; Niger; Nigeria; Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic; Sao Tome and Principe; Sierra Leone; Zimbabwe; South Sudan; Swaziland; Tanzania; Togo; Tunisia; Uganda; Zambia and Somalia.”

Former Namibian President, Sam Nujoma and Chairperson of the Organisation of African Unity, Dr Salim Ahmed Salim from Tanzania, Botswana’s former President Festus Mogae,  Tanzania’s former President Benjamin Mkapa ,  Zambia’s former President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda,  former President Joaquim Chissano from Mozambique and former Vice President Atiku Abubaker from Nigeria will grace the occasion.

The Chairperson of the African Union, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and a representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations will also be amongst the guests.

BRICS member states Brazil, Russia, India and China will be represented by Brazil’s Vice President Michel Temer, India’s outgoing Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, China’s Minister of Home Affairs Mr LI Liguo and Russia’s Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly Mr Sergey Naryshkin.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said the countries attending the inauguration will also be celebrating with South Africa as the country marks 20 years of freedom and democracy.  

Guests are expected to arrive between 5 and 8am. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 11am.

Once the formal proceedings are completed, a cultural event will take place on the Southern Lawns of the Union Buildings.

Several roads around the Union Buildings will be closed.
