APC: The New Enclave of Brigands? – Japheth J Omojuwa

It is unfair to refer to Nigerian rulers as goats. That’d be disrespecting the ability of one of the subjects to at least respond to some form of stimuli. Many Nigerians are likely to have at one time or the other referred to those running this country as goats because of their natural resemblance with the goat’s aversion to being corrected, but such a comparison would be unfair. It would be unfair on the goat. Before you get all worked up about having this unique species of Nigerians being compared to goats, let us address the facts.
It is not every time one must act the part of a slave even though one is a bona fide one. That is a reminder to the defenders of this ruling class that have learnt to relegate their own conscience and sense of value and only just live for one purpose; to defend the interest of those who put food on their table and to defend that interest at any cost. If these interests collide with that of the country, rest assured the country’s interest would have to give way. But this is not a piece about the slaves of this class but the class itself.
Power has corrupted the current ruling class they cannot even see that they have been outnumbered. Goats know when they are outnumbered. As for the people, this is of course not the change we crave. We can continue to deceive ourselves about pretenses of change but when that change comes, we won’t need marketers to sell it to us. The shift of power within the ruling elite is a shift yes, but a shift within the same elite class. Power has not shifted to the people. I really do not understand what the excitement is about. May be an APC supporter who can debate an issue without resorting to insults would help. The PDP was supposed to be the enclave of evil – at least many APC members would make us believe so – then, if a sizeable, influential part of that enclave moves, what are the chances that the new system they abide in does not become the new enclave? How can we look at ourselves in the face and say change has come?
There are of course positives in the power-shift without it being sold as the beginning of the end for corruption and brigandage. The APC has to show it represents that change our people so desperately need by making some essential moves with its newfound power and representation. The party now has more than enough within its means to move for genuine electoral reforms. More than enough power to put structures in place to ensure probes at the National Assembly are not just shakedowns for our uncles and aunts in the National Assembly to make some money. If we have elections under the current rules, Goodluck Jonathan will still “win,” not because he’d get the highest number of votes but because he pays INEC and the rules of the piper and the tune have not changed. Anambra is as bad a disaster as disasters come.
The APC can show that despite the presence of some unruly elements in its midst, this will be a different ball game by ensuring a nationwide biometric registration of old and new members. The PDP style delegation system of primaries is a crime against justice and humanity. If APC follows that PDP path then the party would truly be on its own way to destruction. Please devolve power to the people. I know power is not given but taken but since our people are too docile and too cowardly to take it and you are more or less on the verge of taking it, can you at least show some marked difference from the old order?
Let me make myself clear; The PDP has failed this country woefully. Anyone who denies this can say a silent prayer for God to run his or her life the way the PDP has doomed Nigeria for the last 14 years. If you cannot say that prayer and you go out on the street saying the PDP has tried, you are the most hypocritical of all (wo)men. The PDP has ruined Nigeria. No debate. The APC cannot afford to look like the PDP. Now that it is beginning to look like the PDP in terms of personnel, it is then important for it to play its own games by new rules.  All men are inherently the same and all politicians have more often than not the same objectives.  It would be fine for the APC to take the men of the PDP but only if the rules of the game within the APC change. If the APC plays by the same rule, then we can expect to celebrate this old witch called the PDP as the new saints if and when the APC takes power. Then we’d know we’ve only been moving within the circumference of the same circle.
