Egypt blames police HQ attack on Muslim Brotherhood, banning all its activities, including demonstrations
Egypt’s military-backed government formally declared the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation on Wednesday, accusing it of carrying out a suicide bomb attack on a police station that killed 16 people.
The move, announced by deputy prime minister Hossam Eissa, marks a significant escalation in the government’s crackdown on the group.
It gives the authorities the power to charge any member of deposed President Mohamed Morsi’s movement with membership of a terrorist organisation and bans all its activities.
Mr Eissa said the decision was in response to Tuesday’s deadly bombing targeting a police headquarters in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura, which caused the worst loss of life on the country’s mainland for years.
“Egypt was horrified from north to south by the hideous crime committed by the Muslim Brotherhood group,” Mr Eissa said, without offering evidence to link the group to the bombing.
