According to the Sunday Independent, the raid on the eMalahleni SBV Cash Centre in Mbombela last Sunday saw a group of 10 men posing as SBV investigators infiltrate a vault at the centre’s cash-in-transit section.
It is believed that the men had intimidate knowledge of the centre’s operations; that they broke through a wall in order to gain access to a vault; that they were after a much larger haul in another vault and that the gang drugged guards on duty after tying them up.
According to the newspaper, SBV chief executive Grant Dunnington confirmed the heist was one of the largest in South African history and that between R80m and R90m was taken.
A R1m reward is being offered for information that might lead to the arrest of the suspects.
However, only on Saturday was the amount taken released to the media when two sources confirmed that the haul totalled between R80m and R90m - making it the second largest heist after the 2006 robbery of R100m at OR Tambo International Airport.
