Billboard's Artist of the Year Named — Do You Agree It's a "Surprise"?

He's not locked out of heaven anymore! Despite losing the attention war to scene-stealing artists like Miley Cyrus, Beyonce and Robin Thicke, Bruno Mars was namedBillboard's Artist of the Year for 2013.
Bruno — who'll perform in the Super Bowl halftime show on February 2 — took the No. 1 spot on eight of Billboard’s year-end lists, including: ”Hot 100 Artists,” “Top Overall Artists,” “Hot 100 Singles Airplay,” “Hot Digital Songs,” “Mainstream Top 40″ and “Pop Digital Songs."
Billboard admitted some fans may not have expected Bruno to top the 2013 list.

"During a year defined by mainstream breakouts (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Imagine Dragons), pop divas (Taylor Swift, P!nk, Rihanna, Katy Perry) and retro R&B (Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke), Mars' artist of the year nod may come as a surprise."
However, they noted, "as if on a stealth mission, the adventurous 'Unorthodox Jukebox' commanded a steady presence on the Billboard 200 following its No. 2 debut last December. Remaining in the top 20 every week since then through the Sept. 14 issue, the Atlantic album hit No. 1 in its 12th week. To date, Unorthodox Jukebox has sold 1.8 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan."
As part of Billboard's Best of 2013 rankings, they listed the top artists of the year, based on an artist's chart performance on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard 200 albums chart, plus Boxscore touring revenue, Social 50 chart activity and ringtone sales.
Here are the top 10 artists:
1. Bruno Mars
2. Taylor Swift
3. Justin Timberlake
4. Rihanna
5. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
6. P!nk
7. Imagine Dragons
8. One Direction
9. Miley Cyrus
10. Maroon 5
